Breast Cancer Awareness Month Ends October 31

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we here at Fearless Black Woman want to remind you to regularly perform self-checks, have mammograms as recommended by your physician, and be sure to place (and keep) your health at the top of your list of priorities.

According to the CDC, “Black women and white women get breast cancer at about the same rate, but Black women die from breast cancer at a higher rate…” (1) Some key points from a study, “Patterns and trends in black-white differences in breast cancer incidence and mortality—United States, 1999-2013”:

  • Compared with white women, breast cancer incidence rates were higher among black women who are younger than 60 years old, but lower among black women who are 60 years old or older.
  • Breast cancer was more likely to be found at an earlier stage among white women than among black women.
  • Among women who were 60 to 69 years old, breast cancer death rates dropped 2% per year among white women, compared with 1% per year among black women. This was the largest difference by race. (2)

Also, we encourage you all to head over to the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s website and download their free ebook “Breast Problems That Aren’t Breast Cancer” to learn about other common breast problems and what to do about them.

Be sure to check out Breast Cancer Prevention Partners’ website  for a downloadable fact sheet about Black women and breast cancer. There is also some important information about products to avoid for the prevention of the disease. We warn you, you may want to overhaul your beauty regimen when you read it, but knowledge is power.
