Fellas We Love: Laz Alonso

If the only thing you know about Laz Alonso’s career is that butt-nekkid, baby-oiled shower beating he got from Regina King in “This Christmas”, well…you’ve got a lot to learn.

For example, the Afro-Cuban actor, Howard University Alum, former Wall Street investment banker and devout Christian (according to his Wikipedia) has a filmography that spans two decades. With roles in “CSI: Miami”, “The Practice”, “Entourage”, “Stomp the Yard”, “Miracle at St. Anna,” “Fast & Furious”, “Avatar”, “Straw Dogs” and wayyyy too many more to list here, Laz Alonso is that actor you saw in that thing, that time. Until you saw him sliding around on the bathroom floor, that is. In a towel. All glisteny and whatnot…but I digress…

Fresh off the announcement that his hit Amazon Prime Video series “The Boys” has been renewed for a second season (which airs September 4, 2020), we here at FBW thought it only fitting to make this work of art one of our Fellas We Love. And we do love him…but I digress…

In “The Boys”, Alonso plays “Mother’s Milk”, a member of a vigilante group that is determined to bring down a group of corrupt super heroes. Alonso’s character is responsible for planning and organizing the group’s operations. It’s only our opinion, but the role of Mother’s Milk may just be the role that earns Alonso well-deserved recognition and the “cross-over” appeal that can move an actor’s career to the next level.

The show is highly entertaining, and if you’re a fan of comics, graphic novels (on which the series is based), or the world of superheroes in general, this is one you don’t want to miss. And…well…we love a super-buff, super-smart tough guy who fears nothing and no one (with the exception of his fiancé, Monique—which makes us love him even more). And once you see those arms…and that whole…chest area…um…yeah…but I digress…

Other than “The Boys”, you will also be able to see Alonso in “Power Book II: Ghost” as Sam Santana, “Cash Truck” and “The Harder They Fall” (2021).

More than anything though, Laz Alonso is a well-rounded, highly talented individual who takes his art seriously. The 2012 winner of an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor for “Jumping the Broom”, Alonso is on his way to much greater acclaim, with many more awards to come.
